Toys

A few months ago, I could say the toy situation was pretty well 'under control' in our house, but first Christmas and birthday later, that is so not the case! We seem to be in toy overload these days and need to find a system to rotate them or something as Ellie has so many in our living room right now, she doesn't even know what to play with half the time! She has a few favorites, but pretty much plays with everything here and there. I don't think SHE minds the selection at all =) With an engineer Mom and computer techie Dad, Ellie does have some pretty organized genes somewhere in her, but disorder seems to be her way right now. If we build something with blocks, she knocks them down. If magnets are on the refridgerator, she takes them off. If toys are in the wagon, she takes them out. Maybe it is just the 1-year old way, or maybe we have a creative abstract artist on our hands...time will tell. For now, Mom and Dad will just continue to pick up every night =)

This isn't even an official toy, but it is one of her favorites right now. Auntie Sara got Ellie this medicine ball for her birthday. She loves to carry and push it around and roll with Mama's help.

Ellie's also become quite the little climber lately. Her chair is a lot of fun now that she's figured out how to get on it.

Growing Family

No, no we're not getting a dog...but how will a new baby do? That is one request we can fill, we have one on the way! Baby brother or sister will join our family in August =) We are very excited for Ellie to have a little sibling...with both Colin and I growing up with brothers and sisters, we can't imagine it any other way. Not sure we have our sights set on 4 like each of our families, but we'll see what life with 2 brings and go from there I guess. With two little ones just 19 months apart, we know we will have our hands full!

As far as pregnancy goes, this one's been very good. UNLIKE my pregnancy with Ellie, I have not had the slightest bit of nausea. So, of course all the speculation is that we have a little boy taking it easy on Mama this time around. I have been a bit tired, but honestly, that could just be from work and life alone, pregnancy aside! My old friend Mr. heartburn is back in full force, but I am anti-Tums this time around (and also taking every other kidney stone prevention measure!) Thankfully, Pepcid does the trick to get me through the day and night. My belly has seemed to recall the old form pretty quickly. I am definitely showing at just under 14 weeks now. My official due date is August 25th.

Baby is doing great too! We were fortunate to have an early ultrasound at 7 weeks where we got to see and hear baby's heart beating loud and strong. Since then I've heard it two more times at regular check-ups. Dr's appointments are pretty uneventful at this point, but the big one to look forward to will be April 2nd where we'll hopefully find out the gender of our little one. Baby's still a little peanut (literally) at this point, but growing bigger and stronger every day.

Here's my 13 week belly (taken last weekend). My first 'belly shot' last time was around 21 weeks, and even then I could hide things pretty well with clothes. I am easily 6 weeks ahead in terms of the belly this time around - yikes!

Playing Outside and Valentines

These last few weeks have been so nice (for winter)...not freezing cold OR snowing! Last week we had weather in the 50s and most of our snow melted. Until last weekend, Ellie really hadn't walked outside at all (since she started walking in mid-Dec). So now, we've been having fun playing outside.

Last weekend we walked around out in the driveway and on the sidewalk. Ellie wanted to go for the puddles and eventually got herself full of mud.

This weekend it was a bit colder, and we got a little dusting of snow on Friday night, so Saturday we were out in full snow gear. Ellie was a little marshmallow in her snowpants and coat, but she still got around pretty good. This was her first time really playing in snow, and she didn't know what to make of it at first, but then she was having fun. We were literally only outside for 15 min. because it was colder than we even thought, but at least it was a little fresh air.

And of course, yesterday was Valentine's Day. We thought about going out to dinner, but then decided we didn't want to deal with the busy restaurants, so instead Suzy and Ryan came over and the we all had a great rib dinner. Howie came along too, so Ellie was beyond entertained the entire time. She wouldn't leave his side. She was laying on him, riding him, and sharing her toys so nicely. For a while it was, Ellie put a toy in Howie's mouth, Suzy take it out...this was a very fun game! =) Dinner was fun too as Howie was cleaning up Ellie's mess, and Ellie thought that letting Howie lick her fingers was the funniest thing. After Ellie went to bed, Howie got to rest too, and the adults played a few heated games of euchre and rummy. All-in-all, a fun day and night!

I was surprised to find an island full of flowers on Saturday morning. Colin's been dealing with some computer crises at work lately, so Friday night he was working late again. This was a nice surprise to wake up to though...Ellie even got one too.

And a tender moment with Ellie and her best friend Howie. Howie was checking out the neighbor dogs through the window and Ellie stood right next to him and looked too.

Fun at One

Life with a one year old has been quite the exciting time! Ellie is just full of new things lately...new words, expressions, and confidence. Her word list consists of Hi, Bye, Buh-bye, Mama, Daddy, 'What's that?' (combined with a finger point), and Uh-oh. Ellie's also gotten really good at imitating facial expressions. She sticks out her tongue when you do (or even when you ask her to), and her new favorite one is the 'fish-lips' kiss which she likes to do with Mama. Her confidence is coming with her walking; which is more like running at times. As a result, she has become somewhat of a walking accident. Bumps and bruises are pretty typical now. No really serious injuries yet, but I'm sure our time is coming. It's been really nice here the last few days, and yesterday we were walking around outside. This was really the first time Ellie has walked on her own outside. The little slope to our driveway made her just want to run, but that was certain cause for disaster so Mom and Dad had to stay very close!

Ellie's a great eater. She eats almost anything, but her favorites seem to be bananas (#1 for sure), cottage cheese, string cheese, yogurt, and sweet potatoes. She also likes just about anything with noodles in it. We often have to keep her from shoving too much food in her mouth - her cheeks tend to look like a little chipmunk. We've completely gone away from daytime bottles, just sippy cups with milk or water now. She hasn't taken to milk much yet, but can't get enough water. Bedtime baba is going to be a little harder to give up. To be honest, Mom and Dad just haven't tried too hard with this yet...one thing at a time...

I've noticed Ellie seems to be thinning out a little. Don't get me wrong, she still has a little buddha belly, but the change has been obvious in how her pants fit. I guess she's officially in that active 'toddler' stage when the baby fat starts to disappear. I remember when our nephew Aiden started walking...it was like one day he was a 'baby' and the next time we saw him he was a little boy. It's crazy how that happens. Ellie had her 1 year wellness visit with the Dr. last week, and her stats confirmed my observation. She was 30 3/4 in. tall (90th percentile), and 24 lb. (80th percentile). Up until this point she's always been 90-95% in the weight category. Her head was also 47 cm, which is just perfect for a growing brain!

Ellie has all kinds of favorite toys. We are kind of in toy overload right now, with Christmas and then her birthday just 1 month later - our living room is out of control. She likes to dance to anything that makes music, play with her phones (she has a few and knows exactly how to use them), and push the buttons on the remote (her battery-less one and the 'real' one when she can sneak it past Dad). Ellie also LOVES the computer...we cannot be on it without her on our lap (thankfully she's napping now or else this would take me twice as long to write!) She pretty much likes all of her toys, and when she's bored with them she's in the kitchen cupboards pulling out whatever she can. Ellie loves to read and will bring you book after book if you keep reading them to her.

I can say that 1 has been a fun age so far. I've had friends tell me that 1-2 is easier than 0-1 (or 2-3) so we'll see. So far, the first week has been pretty good!

1st Birthday

Ellie is 1!! While on one hand it's hard to believe she's 1, on the other, life without her seems like an eternity ago. Seriously, what did we do all the time?! It's been a great year with lots of memories, and we're looking forward to another one ahead!

Last weekend we had a wonderful party with Grandmas, Grandpas, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and Friends here to celebrate almost the entire weekend! Ellie had lots of fun playing with her cousins, Brendan, Aiden, and Max, and friends, Noah and Haylie. They are all close in age and very fun to watch. Opening presents was very fun, and Ellie was lucky to get lots of help from Brendan and Noah. By cake time, Ellie was getting a little tired, but she still managed a little mess and enjoyed her sweet treat. There were times when she was a little overwhelmed with everyone here, but overall she did really good and enjoyed her party, her presents, cake, and fun with family and friends. Thanks everyone for a memorable 1st birthday!
