Happy August!

Hi again! It's been about a month since my last post, but there's not much new to tell! I am officially through the first trimester (almost 15 weeks now) and feeling much more like myself these days. Thankfully, the 'morning' sickness which was with me day after day has passed. It's certainly a welcome change!

Baby has grown to the size a lemon now. It's amazing to think something so small is living and growing inside of me. According to my resources, baby now has moving arms and legs and functioning organs. He/she can move facial muscles to squint and groan and may even be sucking his/her thumb. Wow!

We had a general check-up this past Friday. All is looking good, and baby's heart rate was at 130. At my 7-week ultrasound it was 147, but my Dr. said it's perfectly normal for the heart rate to change. There's some speculation that the heart rate can predict the baby's sex, so of course I had to ask. Statistics show that girls generally have higher heart rates while boys tend to be on the low end (low being in the 120s), but it is certainly not a perfect science. My Dr. told us herself that she has a son and a daughter, and BOTH of their heart rates were in the 150s. She said we were right in the middle of the 'normal' range so she wouldn't even make a guess! Our next general check-up is Sept. 6th, and Sept. 24th we have the BIG ultrasound. Assuming baby cooperates we will find out that day whether we'll have a little girl or boy. Our poll is showing 'boy' in the lead so we'll see how many of you guessed right!

My biggest challenge lately has been adjusting my wardrobe. I'm definately in that 'in-between' phase where most of my normal clothes don't really fit (especially my work clothes), but most maternity clothes are a little too big. I can make myself look more or less pregnant depending on what I wear, but there's not much 'showing' just yet.

In other news, there's not much! Not like us to say that right?! We had so much going through the months of June and July that August has been our month to just stay home (or in the state of Wisconsin at least)! We bought kayaks in early July so we've taken them out a few times (Colin more than I). We've also been enjoying time with friends in the area and relaxing at home. Labor Day weekend we're heading to Port Huron, MI for my friend Jen's wedding. I'm standing as a bridesmaid for her, and so far, my dress still fits (though I do have my emergency seamstress on stand-by!)

No new pictures this time. Hope everyone has a great last few weeks of summer. It's been hot in Wisconsin, and we just had our first rain last night in over a month. This is the time of year I always start looking forward to fall - we'll be counting down 'til September 24th this year =) Until next time...

We're Having a Baby!

Surprise! Or maybe this isn't a surprise, but for some of you it may be! Colin and I are having a baby! I've had so much fun following the blogs and websites of friends as they've gone through pregnancy and parenting that I thought it'd be fun to create one of our own. With this first entry, I'll start by recapping the last 3 months, because, amazingly, I'm almost through the first trimester (yeah!) Enjoy!

We officially found out we were pregnant on May 25th. It was kind of a surprising discovery for us (for reasons I won't go into), but a very happy discovery to say the least! It also happened to be the day we were heading home for Memorial Day weekend so the dilemma became do we tell or not?! We decided to wait a few weeks, but it certainly wasn't easy. My mom and sisters have quickly learned that when I turn down a glass of wine, there must be a VERY good reason. I'm also not a very good liar when asked point-blank!

We told our families the weekend of June 22nd when we were home again for my cousin's wedding. Of course, EVERYONE is very excited! This will be the first grandbaby for the Boyer family and the third for the Pomeroy family, but a new baby in either family has certainly excited everyone! Our 4-year old nephew, Brendan, is even talking about his new cousin. Everyone has their predictions of whether it'll be a boy or girl - it's been overwhelmingly 'girl' at this point - but of course, it's too early to tell so everyone will have to wait and see. Our due date is Feb. 6th, so there are also bets on whether we'll hit a family birthday - there are many in Feb. so odds are good that we will!

In general, these last 11+ weeks have been quite the new experience for me and my body. I won't go into the gory details, but I can definitely attest to the following:

1) Morning sickness should more accurately be called morning, noon, and night sickness.
2) Dental hygiene can be a difficult feat with a hyper sensitive gag reflex.
3) Heartburn is a new sensation that I pray will not stick with me after pregnancy.
4) Going to bed by 8:30 pm is perfectly acceptable!
5) Eating every 2-3 hours does help, but when nothing really tastes good it's a real pain to keep up.

I can say, things have been getting easier, and I've felt noticeably better even just this past week. I've learned what to eat and what not to eat, and according to everything I've read (which is a lot!) this should be about the time when my body adjusts to all these hormonal changes and I start feeling better! So, hopefully that's the case!

Despite the unpleasantness, we have had a lot of fun these past few months as well. Every week we enjoy reading the Babycenter update telling us how the baby's changing and to what piece of fruit they're now comparing his or her size (this week we're a fig!) It's also been fun telling friends and family, reading the various books I've received, looking through the name books, and just coming to grips with the reality of this whole life-changing experience! I had my first official prenatal appointment just over a week ago, and we heard the baby's heartbeat for the first time which was very awesome. Here are a few pictures and commentary from some of the other experiences we've had over the past few months.

Our little secret - about a week before we told our families.

This was probably the best day yet. We had an early ultrasound when I was just 7 weeks along. The baby is too small to really see anything at this point, but if you look just to the lower right of the arrow you'll see a brighter spot. That is the baby's heart beating strong which was what we were looking for at this point. It was an amazing experience. I can't wait for another ultrasound!

This is at my cousin Samantha's wedding - the weekend we told our families and also the weekend of our 5-year wedding anniversary (June 22, 2002) - time sure flies!

Sara and Javi, Shannon and Andy, Steph and Joe, and Colin and I celebrating Colin's 30th birthday at Summerfest in Milwaukee (this was the only pic of the 8 of us even though Colin's eyes are half closed!)

Colin, Wellyn, and Dad visiting Ashley in Alaska. A couple of the many scenic pictures from their week of camping, hiking, 4-wheeling, and sight-seeing.

When Colin was in Alaska, I took a few days off and drove out to Minnesota to spend time with Sue, Brendan, and Aiden. Here's a pic of me and boys going down the slide at the park.
