Emmit turned 3 years old on August 25th, and after just a few weeks Emmit is quite good at being a 3 year old. He says the sweetest, most lovey things that just make you want to hug and kiss him, and then in an instant, something doesn't go HIS way, and he's throwing a temper tantrum that makes you want to pull your hair out. Or testing Mom and Dad's limits right to the edge. He definitely knows how to push limits, and frankly time-outs are not very effective. Selective hearing also seems to be a common 3-year old antic...I know he can hear us, even though you'd swear he's deaf at times.
Emmit is very insistent on doing things all by himself which can work for or against us depending on the situation. For example, putting his own clothes on, going to the bathroom, washing his hands, getting a drink of water, brushing his teeth...good, good, good! Buckling his own seatbelt, putting ketchup on his own hot dog, pouring his own milk, cutting his own food...I don't want to say 'bad' necessarily, but these tasks can take A LOT of patience, but when the alternative is a temper tantrum, there's just no winning sometimes. The seat belt buckling is especially challenging...sometimes, he does it right away...other times, it's a painful process. I tend to plan outings w/ the kids now to include the fewest number of times in and out of the car. I have just come to accept that doing ANYTHING with a 3 year old (and 4 year old too) will be a process, and you need to build in time for that.
Emmit likes to remind us that he's a 'big boy' now though so doing things by himself will be the way of the future! He loves getting dressed by himself, so it's a treat to see what he'll pick out. He's a little 'layer happy' at times and will put on 3 shirts and shorts over pants. I can ususally get him down to one matching ensemble easy enough though. He loves his 'basketball shorts' and will almost always pick those to wear. One thing I've noticed is that he always puts his shoes on the right feet. This sticks out to me because Ellie always put her shoes on the wrong feet, and still does a lot. Emmit took to potty training so easily, and for this we cannot be thankful enough. He was pretty much potty trained by our 4 year old neighbor boy (I am not even joking, all he needed was a potty partner and that was it!) It was a treat for us to have him potty trained right at the beginning of the summer. Being a boy, it's a treat for him to pee outside, and he's always asking to do so! This was something he learned this summer as well.
Emmit is a story teller. He talks a lot, and will just make random things up at times. Every story he tells happened 'last night'. He'll say things out of the blue that just make us smile...he'll say 'you look pretty Mama' or 'I like your necklace' - who wouldn't love that every morning =) He always tells me, 'Mama, you're my favorite friend'. He can be just so loveable. I can see him growing up, but then he's still such a baby to me. As easily as he can be a 'big boy', he can be a baby too, and want me to carry him. He still fits pretty easily on my hip =)
Emmit LOVES trucks...he is obsessed. He knows all the different types (dump truck, articulated dump truck (it's so funny when he says this), loader, bulldozer, excavator, motor grader, I'm probably forgetting some...). He has several truck books, and gets so excited when we see some on the road. With all the road construction we have here in the summer, there's pretty much a daily siting. Emmit likes riding his new '4 wheel', riding bikes in the driveway, playing with cars and trucks, or just running around wild. He is ALL boy. Coloring, drawing, looking at books, or anything quiet and calm for that matter are NOT his thing. He barely has the attention span for TV or movies unless it's an action-packed show like Cars or Scooby Doo. He can also have quite the imagination, and with Ellie, the two of them are going on adventures or playing dragon in the castle, or some other made-up games. They like to go exploring at the 'creek' behind our house, or play in the sandbox too. Our new sandbox has been one of Emmit's favorite places to play this summer. He's still constantly climbing and jumping, and is not afraid of much. He loves water and will jump right in without hesitation. He just started his first swimming lessons, so I'll feel much better when he's able to swim.
Emmit loves to 'work' with Daddy. He has his own tool kit that he carries around, and has such a fun time doing projects around the house. Colin will drill a bunch of screws into a board, and Emmit will be happy as can be, screwing and unscrewing. He has learned his tools pretty good too, and will hand Daddy things when he needs them. He loves to carry wood for a bonfire, and light the sauna with Grandpa too. Emmit has always been 'Mama's boy', but more and more lately, he's taken to doing things with Daddy and will even let Daddy put him to bed now. He also really loves his Grandpas and Uncles. He likes doing stuff with the boys.
At his 3 year well-check, Emmit checked out healthy as can be. He is 3'1" tall (25th percentile) and 34 lbs (75th percentile). Emmit is a good eater and likes a variety of foods. He really likes hummus and guacamole, and just dipping things in general. He likes ketchup on everything. I am going to schedule his first dentist appointment soon (not quite sure how he'll do with that?) He still naps every day, and wakes me up most mornings too. He is our early riser - usually around 6:00-6:30.
Emmit had a fun 3rd birthday party with family and friends. The theme was dumptrucks of course! Happy Birthday Emmit John - we love you!

Opening presents...he got so many, it was a bit of present overload. He really liked everything he got though. We have a new insurgence of 'boy toys' in our house now =)
Happy Birthday Emmit! Henry tries to make a lunge for the cake in the end...hahaha =) This is so typical of times in our house right now!
Eating cake!
We rented a little bounce house for the party. It was a hit with the kids, and Ellie, Emmit, and Henry were playing in it until dark!
